- Enter main search terms or keywords in the first (Match stories that mention any of these phrases...) box. Each word or phrase should be entered on a separate line. A phrase of two or more words will search for stories with those words in that exact order. Stories that match ANY of these words or phrases will be pulled.
For example:
Royal Bank CIBC Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Bank of Montreal Scotiabank
Use the drop-down (which appears...) menu to pinpoint where search terms will appear within stories. Restricting your search to the Headline or Lead will locate major articles on a topic.
- (optional)
Enter additional search terms (which must also appear in resulting stories) in the second (And require at least one mention of one of these...) box. Words entered in this box represent additional search concepts. Again, use the drop-down menu to pinpoint where search terms will appear within stories. If this box is used, only stories that match at least one keyword or phrase from the first box and one from this second box will be pulled.
- (optional)
Enter search terms that must NOT appear in the stories in the third (BUT EXCLUDE any story that mentions one of these...) box. Be warned that terms entered into this box are given precedence when combined with your other search terms. Avoid entering general terms that can be used in multiple contexts. Once more, use the drop-down menu to pinpoint where search terms will appear within stories. Stories that match ANY of these terms or phrases will not be included in your results.
- Use the drop-down Date Range boxes to specify general search time frames (e.g. "last 6 months;" "this year and last") or specific date ranges (e.g. "Feb 21 1991 to March 21 1991).
- Select a radio button next to a drop-down box under Database(s) to Search to select which sources you would like to include. There are three choices:
Choose Select a single source if you only want to search one newspaper.
Choose Select a library of sources if you would like to search a pre-selected group of sources (i.e. "Ontario Papers.") You can also create your own source library using the "manage your libraries" link next to this drop-down menu.
Choose Show me the full list of databases if you would like to pick and choose which sources you would like from our full list of sources.
- After you submit your search, you will be presented with a list of search results. Headlines and lead paragraphs of stories that match your search criteria will be displayed.
