- Type in a word or phrase that would appear in the article(s) you wish to retrieve. The more specific the word or phrase you choose, the fewer articles you will retrieve. If you know an exact headline, you may type it in this box.
- Choose where in the story your word or phrase must appear. Your choices are:
- In Headline (word or phrase must appear in the headline for story to be retrieved)
- In Headline or Lead (word or phrase can appear in the headline or first 10 lines of the story)
- In Byline (word or phrase is the author of the article)
- Anywhere in Story (select this option if it does not matter where in the story your word or phrase appears)
- Choose the date range you wish to search. You may select from pre-set ranges in the first drop-down box (e.g. "in the last six months; in the last two weeks) , or you may specify an exact date range.
- Choose the sources you wish to search. You may search a single source, a Library of sources, or see our complete list of sources to select multiple sources. For details on selecting sources, see our help topic"Selecting Sources in Archives Searches."
- Once you are satisfied with your keyword, date, and source source selections, you may click "Search" to proceed (If you have chosen "show me the complete list of databases" you will be taken to the source selection screen at this time).
- You will be presented with a list of articles which meet your search criteria. Articles are sorted in reverse-chronological order (most recent first).
- If your results are not specific enough, you may click "Search in Results." This will allow you to do another search WITHIN the results you have already retrieved. Example: your original search term was "Canada Trust." You now wish to narrow this down to documents about Canada Trust's merger with TD. You may click "Search in Results" and use the keyword "merger" to find documents that mention both "Canada Trust" and "merger" in the same article.
